Autumn and winter are always about neutrals but this season grey
kicking its rivals black and navy out of the way and taking centre
stage. Previous seasons it slunk around as the poor cousin, with grey
tights being popular but now grey is this season’s key neutral and even
grey nail-varnish is de rigur. So the skies might be grey and dismal
but wearing grey is fun and playful. Grey seems to bring out the best
in woollen and knitted fabrics because it has a slight variation in the
dye that gives a more interesting loo. Grey looks sleek and elegant it
also looks warm, grey makes you look like someone people can warm to
and be around.

Unlike black or navy, grey is much more flexible and much easier to
wear, grey comes in a limitless tonal range which can flatter any
complexion and is much easier to mix and match with other neutrals and
Colours. Teale and deep blue purples are back with us this season and
match up well with any number of greys. Teale goes exceptionally well
with either mid or darker storm greys for a dramatic look that is
softer and more contemporary. A deep storm grey with a deep purple
creates a dramatic look that can take you from daytime to evening with
a change of shoes and jewellery and a bit of extra eye colour. Remember
when wearing grey you want to wear slightly more dramatic make-up to
balance up the look, smoky eyes tinged with purple are on trend as are
plum and berry shades for lips, and you can lighten the look with the
new soft golds that are in fashion right now.

You can wear a palette of different shades of grey to create a
layered textured look, soft light greys go really well with creams,
off-whites and warmer neutrals, like beige, camel and taupe for a
natural look that is very on trend. You can either wear blocks of
neutral tones or maybe experiment with stripes and patterns. Grey with
black is dramatic and can create a great contrasting graphic look that
is classic and contemporary at the same time.

Invest in key grey pieces, such as jumpers, cardigans and this
season’s must have jumper dress. A grey jumper dress or this season’s
slinky long jumper over leggings, straight leg or slim fit jeans – dark
denim or worn black denim looks really sharp. You can play with a
belted jumper over a full length skirt and boots for a more country
look. For this look try teaming, black or dark chocolate brown slim
belts, layer up your belts of you don’t want a hard waist line.

You can dress the jumper dress for evening by adding in this
season’s richly coloured Indian inspired jewellery in purples,
turquoises, jade, and gold. Silvers with grey give a very modern look
but if you want a warm look and to rock the ethnic trends in
accessories, gold is right on the mark.

Rather than go for the traditional black or navy winter coat, why
not wear a light colour or a patterned coat that will be set off by
your wardrobe stable grey jumper or jumper dress, wear it open teamed
with a leather belt, coupled with this season’s essential footwear the
urban hiker boot, layers of scarves and a casual but sexy beret, you
will be warm as toast, slinky and utterly fabulous darling!
