Ergonomic used to be a word that few people had even heard of but these days it has become the norm for offices to supply ergonomic keyboards to employees who suffer from strain injuries as a result of sitting at a computer for lengthy periods of time. At home too, people have discovered the benefits of this keyboard design, allowing for a more natural typing action and less strain on wrists and arms.

If someone you know is still using a standard keyboard but shows signs of aches and pains from keyboard use, this could make a great Christmas present. There are a number of different designs on the market and these include keyboards that have an ergonomic flowing design on the actual unit and the keys, along with keyboards that physically split in the middle, allowing one keyboard to be used by different family members. For the ergonomic setting the keyboard is moved apart to create a split down the centre of the keys and it puts less stress on the wrists whilst typing.

Another point to consider is whether to choose a wireless keyboard. This obviously has the advantage of being even more mobile in terms of positioning it exactly where the user feels most comfortable. These models aren’t necessarily more expensive indeed, there is a great deal of competition in this marketplace at the moment so there are plenty of quality products to choose from, at affordable prices. A wrist pad is a useful addiction to an ergonomic keyboard and many models are designed with these built in. This is another way in which to remove some of the strain from the wrists while typing.

On some models it is just the shape of the keyboard that has been ergonomically designed while other layouts see individual keys placed in such as way as to minimise typing strain. If you’re buying a gift then it probably won’t be possible to get the recipient to try out the various keyboards on the market. But, if you’re buying for yourself, make sure you get a feel for the different options so you can choose the model that suits you best and that you find most comfortable. It’s worth spending a little extra if you find a keyboard that really offers you the ideal key position and optimum comfort, especially if you spend a lot of time typing.
